There is a very simple, very cool technique in After Effects which allows you to play with color, light, and shadows.

There is a combination of three settings, one on the object receiving the image, one casting the image, and the light which produces the image. This is one of those effects that is so easy to capture, nominal learning curve, yet really impressive results right away.

Any catches ? Not really. There are always surprises and other factors and like any new technique your comfort level comes with a wee bit of practice. Like so often, my first experience was getting it to work, then not being able to reproduce it thoughtlessly. This technique is so simple there are only a couple issues, so let's take a look.

When I'm learning something new, I want to isolate any settings that ultimately affect one another. I also want to keep it simple. Include objects that you need to define and test your new technique and no others. This prevents the introduction into your composition of anything 'other than' the objects, technique, and effects you are proving. Once you see and verify exactly what produces the effect you want, what may vary or skew, then bring everything back into the larger context of a composition where you are actually going to use this technique. If you have issues, you can go back and forth with the certainty that it works, that certain parameters are necessary and separate this from everything else in your composition.

If this sounds a bit wordy, this is a better real world example, just for the effect I'm sharing here. I chose a stained glass image, brought in a textured backdrop. Created 3 surfaces, one behind and to the right and left of this stained glass. On stained glass (which is a .jpg file type), turn on 'Casts Shadows' and move 'Light Transmission' to 100%. You can leave all other settings at their default.

On the backdrops, mine are image files but they could be simply solid settings within After Effects, turn on 'Accepts Shadows'. Now create a light, setting it's 'Cast Shadows to 'On'. That's really it. When I didn't always see color shadow right away, I began to play with the orientation of the stained glass.

Just as in real life, the relationship, distance and angle between the light and the glass in reference to the surface receiving the shadow make all the difference. Play with th orientation of the surface receiving the light, in my case the stained glass. However, one of the most fun discoveries is that while glass, and especially stained glass allow light to pass through creating a colored shadow, After Effects is simply obedient software.

If the object you want to 'Cast Shadows' is a picture, or a movie, or quilt, or even yourself, After Effects will obey. Just because you don't transmit light doesn't mean you can use this setting in After Effects. Use it on a picture, clothing because any object you define to 'Cast Shadows' will and it will transmit it's color, just like a stained glass.

It helps to play with the settings that make this work: 'Cast Shadows' on the receiving object, 'Receives Shadows' on the accepting surface, and 'Casts Shadows' on the light. Besides these 'on/off' settings, adjusting the 'light transmission' setting on the object which cast shadows, and the light intensity of the light brighten your new image.

Experimenting with the positional relationships of all three objects may be the best way to see the varied results. Once you are comfortable with the settings, that produce these results, experiment with the relationships, angles, and distances just as you would in a movie settings.

This is a lot of fun and produces 3D results with brilliant color on your first efforts.

Miss Lavell or Lavelle White began performing in Houston clubs in the 1950's with the Johnny Copeland Band. Scouted by Don Robey of Duke-Peacock Records, she was signed to that label and cut her first sides with Duke in 1958. She consequently had several regional hits, including "Stop Those Teardrops", featuring Dr. John on piano, and "Yes, I've Been Crying." In all, she recorded nearly a dozen sides for Duke; she also wrote "Lead Me On" for Bobby "Blue" Bland. White also toured nationally throughout the '50's and '60's as an opening act or supporting act for numerous R&B packages, which included BB King, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Sam Cooke, Gene Chandler, Gladys Knight & The Pips, the Isley Brothers, Aretha Franklin, and Smokey Robinson. After her recording career ended at Duke in 1964, she continued working clubs in Texas and the south, including stints with famed Arkansas guitarist Lary Davis. She left Houston in the late 70's and moved to Chicago, where she beacame the headliner at the famed blues club the Kingston Mines from 1978 -1987. While in Chicago she worked with such notables as Jr. Wells, Buddy Guy and Lonnie Brooks. She returned to Houston in 1988 and once again began working the clubs, including Antone's in Austin. She has since been voted Houstons Blues Artist Of The Year, and recieved three French Academy Awards, including the Bill Broonzy Award and the Charlie Cross Academy award by President George Mitterand for her talent and contribution the the ...

How to evaluate the risks and best practice for importing goods from China. An insiders practical guide to the opportunities and pitfalls.

Sources for goods in China

First establish who the supplier is! It seems obvious but there are many routes to buying products in China through agents, trading companies, wholesalers and factories or any number of "back door" sources. Agents operate on a commission basis whilst trading companies include costs in the quoted price, most wholesalers and factories do not have export approvals so have to operate through a registered agent or trading company to export to you at all.

In my experience almost every sales person that I have met in China who is not the owner of the business has shown interest in either setting up on his own by "stealing" his employer's customers and product designs or simply doing his own deals on the side through friends, contacts or family.

On the internet there are many scams and dubious "traders". But accepting that you are lucky or diligent enough to find a legitimate agent/trading company, you will find that Chinese business ethics are very different. Most Chinese friends and contacts, that I have spoken to on the subject, believe that "cheating" is the name of the game for people in business.

Negotiating the price is an art form poorly practiced in the West in my view. Certainly in street purchases in China you may well think that you have done well to reduce the price first quoted by 20% or more (often the normal negotiating "add-on" is >50% in street markets) this figure can be very much higher for foreigners. Whilst the situation may be quite a bit different for more formal purchasing the principals are much the same.

But then there are all the "extras" like packing materials, printing and minor changes, inland costs etc which can be used to hike the price back up, or a possibly a worse scenario is the practice of cutting corners on materials and quality to regain the lost margin.

Having a good feel for the all inclusive price from a number of suppliers for the specific product you want gives you the purchasing power to negotiate and buy the right product from your selected supplier at a reasonable price hopefully without any "extras".

Payment terms are more often than not 30% down payment with the residue on completion of manufacture. But beware the requests for payment in full with a money order through Western Union, these payments are to individuals and generally are not traceable once made. No terms, no security and probably no goods and only bitter experience to be gained !

Are the prices quoted ex-works, FOB, CIF, delivered warehouse - what has been agreed and who pays and at what stage ? Who raises the shipping documents, packing list and commercial invoice and will these documents enable you to clear the goods at the port of destination, assuming the goods exist in the first place never mind whether they are of merchantable quality when they arrive?

Developing long term relationships with a few suppliers who you know well pays dividends. Getting to this point with a new supplier needs extreme caution no matter what their pedigree until a personal relationship has developed but even then be careful. The supplier's staff may also be offering your products to your customers or competitors at lower prices if they can find out who they are.

Products

Is there a specification? Has this been agreed with your supplier. Do they actually understand the specification ?

What sort of things do you need to specify ? Have you included labelling, marks, packaging including quality of cardboard etc as well as materials or components to be used, type and colours of paints and finishes, instructions in a language suitable for your client. Instructions in Chinese don't go down too well in Europe. Also consider the tests to be conducted during manufacture and on completion. Do you need CE or RoHS approvals for importing electrical goods into Europe? If wood is contained in the product or the packing are fumigation certificates required ?

Does the supplier own the intellectual property rights of the product ? Don't believe you can import well known international brands unless you intend to buy them from the brand owner. Gucci, Samsung or Philips or any owner of a well known brand certainly won't allow a Chinese supplier to sell their branded products at low prices through the back door! China is probably the world's largest source of fake or pirated goods with well known logos and branding on packaging that are simply copies or worse still just a logo stuck on a similar looking product.

Not only will there be little or no warranties but worse you risk serious legal action and possibly a criminal conviction if you cannot show proof of ownership of the brand name or an agreement exists from the brand owner when you import.

"This is Hertfordshire online" reported that a Tolworth man has been ordered by Kingston Crown Court to sell his flat and car to pay back £55,000. He was jailed for 12 months in March after building up a criminal business by importing fake designer clothes from India and selling them as genuine on eBay.

China exports to countries all over the world and to many third world countries and of course supplies the Chinese domestic market where quality standards of the West are unknown or irrelevant. The factory may be oblivious to relatively strict European Standards if they have never exported before or have not exported to the EU before. So it may not be a matter of cheating you they may simply just not know what is needed to comply with EU import regulations.

Likewise if they have not exported before they may have no idea how to comply with Chinese Export control regulations covering such things as foreign exchange, tax, licensing etc so whilst their intentions may be good the transaction may fail as they are unable to perform their part of the contract. This could mean that they can't convert the foreign currency at a sensible rate, they misunderstood the costs and procedures for exporting the goods through a Chinese Trading company including transport, customs clearance, documentation, tax and duties etc. These things can slow the transaction by weeks or it may become impossible to perform the contract at the price agreed and the transaction fails. But you have paid your money and either the supplier has it or it is still with a Chinese bank who won't release it.

As attractive as you may think that buying from China appears, the prospect of selling to the West by inexperienced employees in China sounds just too good to be true ! The end user prices blazoned across the internet by Western retailers are absolutely out of this world to a factory worker who receives probably no more than US0 or a salesman on US0 cash a month. The temptation to give exporting a try sounds just too tantalizing, it seems everything to gain and almost nothing to lose !!

Quality

ISO 9000 in my view is about applying common sense to the supply process of specifying and checking that what you order is what you get and is the basis for best practice.

If you don't specify what you want your expectations are unlikely to be met ..... crystal balls don't work too well even with the internet to help. Especially so when one party speaks English and the other is battling with Mandarin instead of his local Chinese dialect probably through an interpreter and with a very different technical and cultural background.

Products need to be specified in detail and cover such aspects as packaging and labeling, it then makes sense to get someone to check that what you have specified is understood and produced by the supplier before you release the final payment.

Suppliers in China, like anywhere else, come in many shapes and sizes, from huge State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Joint Ventures (JVs) with Western and/or Asian partners, private companies, Wholly owned Foreign Enterprises (WFEs) and family businesses. It's not going to benefit you by going to the biggest state owned group of factories in China if you intend to order only a few cartons a month. Likewise the small family business won't cope, though they may say they will, with 20 or 30 containers a week.

The Chinese Way

I have often been told "ah! but we do it the Chinese way here"

I believe that one of the greatest difficulties for newcomers involved in importing from China is coming to terms with the fact that doing business in China is very different to doing business in the West. The thinking processes, ethics, morals, life experiences, expectations, culture, politics, laws, education, and government involvement in everyday business life is very very different and not at all easy to predict even by long in the tooth, experienced ex-patriates from the West let alone newcomers.

Here is as an insight to some different thinking from my personal experience.

In many factories in South and Eastern China shop floor employees are mostly migrant workers from poor rural areas. They speak their native language and may struggle to communicate with the city dwellers around them. Their living accommodation, food, clothing, recreation and welfare, such that it is, will normally be provided by the employer. The wages paid in cash are usually very low as a result. Workers may only travel home once a year. Normally there is no schooling available for migrant worker's children in many of the big cities so money is sent home where the family is based.

Consequently the enterprise cost basis is very different to the West and would be considered more like an overhead than a variable cost in Western accounting terms. It is likely that the success of the factory, if of any size at all it will have direct government involvement, and may well be measured by the number of people employed rather than the financial performance.

Several Chinese friends have explained to me that discarding litter in the street provides jobs for those who have to pick it up and I sometimes really wonder if faulty product also creates those extra jobs too! A cynical viewpoint not to be taken too seriously but perhaps provides an inkling of possible different logic, value and thinking patterns.

Branded Products

Many very well known, high quality Branded products are made in China. Some of the largest and most successful manufacturers of Chinese products that are best known in the World are often made by Joint Ventures or Wholly owned Foreign Enterprises.

These products are manufactured to very high standards in factories with professional management and high levels of investment in plant, people and processes. The products are world class and sold and marketed by the Brand owner.

These Branded products are not legitimately available to non-approved importers and if they are offered to you in China they are undoubtedly fake copies or stolen or simply similar product with a famous logo attached. Chinese copyright law exists but has not yet caught up with the thousands upon thousands of companies that copy other's products either unsolicited for domestic or export consumption or as requested by foreign importers.

Don't be fooled..... it is illegal to import or sell these products in Europe and a criminal offence with severe sentences and penalties

Summary

Whilst you may have got some very negative vibes from this article that is not my intent. The future for manufacturing is in China. Business is done very successfully here by resourceful, competent very able and very willing business partners that really want to make it happen for you and themselves in the long term and on a reliable and successful basis.

My intent is to add to your awareness of how different things may be, just don't throw away common sense with your enthusiasm. Others make it happen so can you!

Don't Drive Through - Drive To - The Highlands!

Many of you may have never heard of the Highlands before. It is that beautiful, breathtaking part of New Jersey that lies about an hour from Philadelphia and about 40 minutes from New York City. It stretches from Phillipsburg New Jersey on the Delaware River to beautiful Mahwah, Bergen County. You may have even driven through it on you way to Philadelphia or New York City or New York State. I guess it shouldn't surprise those that live in this rural, historic and pristine part of New Jersey - it seems like everything else passes through!

Mother Nature Passes Through - passing through with the Appalachian Trail, the Highlands and the Atlantic Flyway. Our location on the Atlantic flyway makes the Highlands one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the State of New Jersey. In general New Jersey boasts the highest density of wildlife per square mile of any state in the nation. New Jersey, the fourth smallest state, hosts over 325 birds species, 90 mammal species, 79 reptile and amphibian species and over 400 species of fish in its 8,722 square miles. The Appalachian Trail goes through 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. In New Jersey 74 miles of the trail passes through - from the Delaware Water Gap, passing Sunfish Pond, following the Kittatinny Ridge and then passing through High Point and Wawayanda State Parks. Part of the Appalachian Trail is the Highlands Region - 88 municipalities and nearly 860,000 acres of forested ridges, rolling farmlands, diverse recreation, abundant wildlife and historic treasures.

History Passes Through - From the soldiers that fought in the revolution to the transportation methods that fueled the industrial revolution! Hessians and the Continental army scurried back and forth across the counties and what has become known as the Crossroads of the American Revolution. Washington's troops spent two harsh winters in the hills of Morristown. The strategic location afforded him proximity to New York City, defensible terrain, important communication routes and access to critical resources.

Iron ore found in the region fueled the army with ammunition during the Revolution War. After the war the mining of iron ore spurred growth of many towns. While mining began in the early 1700's, after the Revolutionary War it flourished. As markets opened ways to transport the iron ore developed.

In 1820 Morristown businessman George P. McCullough conceived the idea of the Morris Canal. The canal went from Phillipsburg to Jersey City, transporting coal from Pennsylvania as well as iron ore and other goods across northern New Jersey through a series of water turbine powered inclined plane, locks and aqueducts. The Morris Canal stretched 102 miles overcoming an elevation change of 914 feet, powered by water from Lake Hopatcong and Greenwood Lake.

In 1830 the D&R Canal was constructed. This traveled from Bordentown to New Brunswick, passing through what is today Somerset County. The canal operated until 1932, being overcome by the speed with which the railroads could transport goods.

During the time of the Morris Canal and the Railroads Phillipsburg was a transportation hub. Five lines ran to or through Phillipsburg as well as three canals converging on the Delaware River - the Morris Canal on the New Jersey side and two other canals across from it's riverbank in Easton, PA.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey's main line ran from Jersey City west through Phillipsburg and across the Delaware River to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Branches also stretched into southern New Jersey to Delaware Bay. The Lehigh and Hudson River Railway ran northeast-southwest across northwestern New Jersey, connecting the line to the Poughkeepsie Bridge, NY with Easton, PA, where it interchanged with other rail lines. The Lehigh Valley Railroad transported anthracite coal - cleaner, "smoke-free" soft coal - from Pennsylvania to the New York harbor markets. This coal became the new railroad fuel as well as the fuel for New Jersey's growing industries in Paterson and Newark.

The Lenni-Lenape inhabited New Jersey long before the first settlers arrived. They lived off the land and therefore traveled with the seasons. In the spring they planted gardens around their permanent settlements. In the summer, they went to the shore to catch oysters and clams. In the fall, they would move back to their village and harvest their crops. In the winter, they hunted deer and other animals. The Lenni-Lenape were organized into three subtribes. In the north, the subtribe was known as Minsi "the people of the stony country". Many of the trails established by the Lenni Lenape to travel back and forth would become the early highway system for the settlers. Other historic roads include Old Mine Road which runs from New Jersey to New York and thought to be the oldest continuously-used road in the United States. At a length of 104 miles, it stretches from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to Kingston, New York. The road follows the Delaware River through the western edge of Sussex and Warren Counties.

It is believed that Dutch miners began construction of the road in the 1600s in order to transport copper ore from mines along the Delaware River to Esopus (now Kingston) along the Hudson River in Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. Starting in the late 1600s, Dutch settlement began along the course of the road. The road exists today, in New Jersey is largely undeveloped. As it travels through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, it still retains much of its historical and rural charm.

Old York Road (the King's Highway) was built in the 18th century to connect Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with New York City, New York. By stage coach one could make it from one city to the other in two days. Old York Road began at Coryell's Ferry in Lambertville. The original route followed Main Street to York Street and briefly joined up with Route 179, the modern Old York Road. From there it traveled to Centerville, Hunterdon County, so named because of its position between Philadelphia and New York, which made it a resting place for the coaches. Old York road also travels through Somerville, Bridgewater and Bound Brook in the Highlands.

Today, Norm Goldman, Editor of the book reviewing and interviewing site Bookpleasures is excited to have as our guest, Amy Friedman, acclaimed writer who wrote Tell Me a Story for Universal Press Syndicate.

Good day Amy and thank your for agreeing to participate in our interview.

Good day, Norm, and thanks a million for having me.

Norm:

Amy, please tell our readers a little bit about your personal and professional background. What is your background in children's literature?

Amy:

I think the road to writing for an audience of children began when I was a kid living in a house with two reading-addicted parents.

The furniture in our family's den was barely visible beneath the books, magazines and newspapers, and my Dad, a lawyer, had always wanted to be a journalist; in fact before going to law school he worked as a sports reporter (combining his two passions), but in that era Jews had difficulty getting jobs as journalists, so Dad went to law school.

When I was about 12, I wrote my first short story, and I decided right then and there that I wanted to be a writer, though like all writers' lives, the road to here has taken many surprising turns.

I studied English at Barnard College, with a minor in creative writing. In those days I wrote only fiction, and in the late '70s, I went to City College for an MFA in writing because Donald Barthleme, a writer I admire enormously, was teaching there. He truly was the person who taught me how to write well, how to work hard, and how, too, to take deep pleasure in writing.

In the mid-80s my life took one of those glorious turns that feeds a writer's imagination and nourishes the soul. I'd lived in Manhattan for nearly 15 years, but I fell in love with a Canadian and moved to a sheep farm outside--OUTSIDE--of Gananoque, Ontario. I adored the farm and discovered a marvelous the newspaper published in nearby Kingston. Then owned and run independently, The Kingston Whig-Standard published a stunning magazine, and this is where, ultimately, Tell Me A Story and my close involvement with children's literature began. I had worked for eight years as an adult columnist, and that column led to two published two books, the first a memoir called Kick the Dog and Shoot the Cat, about the similarities between sheep farming and my previous work in New York, in film production (on such blockbuster Hollywood hits as Ghostbusters).

I still had no idea that ultimately I would be writing for children in those first years on the newspaper. I had, though, expanded from writing strictly fiction to writing nonfiction, personal essay, and plays.

Norm:

Will you share a little bit about Tell Me A Story with us?

Amy:

One day in the early '90s I approached our editor, Neil Reynolds, and told him I thought the newspaper needed something for kids. I'd loved newspapers when I was young. Neil was all for it and told me to go figure out what this new feature should be and let him know.

There was a fabulous children's librarian in the Kingston Public Library, Mary Beaty, and she spent hours leading me through old books of folklore. As we talked, I began to remember how much I'd always loved mythology, and when Mary showed me a version of the Finnish epic, The Kalevala and some old Chinese folktales I'd never known existed, I was hooked. Mary also led me to the Toronto Public Library collection in the Boys and Girls House, a collection established in 1922, the first children's library in the British Empire. The Toronto Public Library's relationship to children's literature is a great story in itself, but that's for another day.

Long story a little shortened, Mary also introduced me to Jillian Gilliland who by then had illustrated more than 20 children's books. Jillian loved the idea of a column of retold folk and fairytales, legends and myths; we told Neil we wanted our column to be children's fiction, new and old, illustrated all, and just a few weeks later, in November 1991, we began to produce The Bedtime Story, six days a week. I wrote only one or two a week and selected and edited other stories from mountains of submissions. Within a month ten other papers in Canada had picked up The Bedtime Story, and one day in the newsroom our city editor, Norris McDonald, pulled me aside to introduce me to Dan Dalton. Dan was a syndicate salesman, but this time instead of selling, he wanted to talk about the buying The Bedtime Story for Universal Press Syndicate.

Universal signed me to write ONE story each week, Jillian to illustrate, in color, and Tell Me A Story was born. It quickly caught fire and was soon running in hundreds of papers around the world.

We lost many of our clients when newsprint doubled in price in the mid-90s (the column takes up lots of space), but we still run in about 100 papers (the numbers vary monthly), even as far away as China.

My house now (I'm now in Los Angeles) looks a little bit like the Boys and Girls Room at the Toronto Public Library, and one of the best parts of the whole experience has been relationships I've developed over the years with people who've stumbled upon the column. For years I corresponded with a Kalevala scholar in Finland. I received a copy of a just-discovered Chinese manuscript from some folklore scholars in Hawaii. The folklore scholars keep me honest and are constantly teaching me new things about literature's roots, for instance; and Jillian keeps me honest too because every one of her paintings is accurate down to the tiniest details. We do our homework, making sure to be true to the details of time, place, dress, flora, fauna, architecture, and so on.

The column has generated two books--Tell Me A Story and The Spectacular Gift, but I'd always wanted to make an audio version. In my life outside of Tell Me A Story I teach creative nonfiction and personal essay writing at UCLA, and through this work, and through my writing and performing personal essays, I've met dozens of extraordinarily talented actors.

How did you go about choosing the stories and music to be included in Tell Me A Story?

Amy:

When I decided I was going to produce the CD on my own, I knew I'd need partners. First my husband, Dennis Danziger, a writer and teacher, enthusiastically joined me, but he wanted to be a sort of silent partner. I had performed in a spoken word venue known as Melt in Your Mouth which is produced by Lori Ada Jaroslow and had so admired her work, both as producer and as a director, I invited her to co-produce. She was immediately intrigued.

Last summer I handed Lori a stack of more than 100 of my stories, and Lori began to read, ultimately winnowing the selection to 50. Lori also suggested three possible sound engineers and composers. When I heard Laura Hall's music (and remembered seeing her on Whose Line Is It Anyway, and feeling such great energy emanating from her), I decided she was the one.

Laura, Lori and I spent days sitting in coffee shops talking about the selections--finally narrowing our list to 25. We looked for range--different parts of the world, male, female and animal leads, funny and serious, stories that had different rhythms and different messages.

But we couldn't get below 25, so we called in Laura's two daughters, Ruthie, age 7, and Eva, 9. The girls read all 25 and gave us brilliant post-it notes; they also negotiated with each other--Eva giving up her favorite when Ruthie gave up hers, and so forth.

We winnowed to 10, and then, once we began recording, we realized we would have to lose two more. Our mixer told us once a CD goes over 72 minutes, quality is sacrificed, and the stories read longer than we'd anticipated.

We've promised Ruthie that her favorite story, a French Canadian tale called The Talking Cat, will be included on one of our next cds.

Norm:

Could you tell our readers something about the different people who narrate the stories and how were they chosen?

Amy:

This was sheer joy. Lauren Tom was first on my list. I met Lauren when years ago she took a writing class from me. I've seen her perform on stage, in films, on television, and I've heard her voice on the many animated shows, but maybe most importantly, I've watched her at play with her two sons who she adores.

Kathleen Wilhoite's a similar story. When I first heard Kathleen read one of her stories at a spoken word theater (and heard her sing as well), I knew I wanted to work with her. Her voice is inimitable--husky, funny, sweet, sassy, beautiful, and wise. And Kath too is a devoted mom to her son and daughter. Lori was a given; she's a longtime talented singer and performer, and she's worked with some of the finest actors around. It was Lori's contacts and instincts which took us to Jack

McGee, Charlayne Woodard, and Poppy Champlin. Eventually we decided we wanted to cast against type; that is, that we didn't want Lauren reading a Chinese story because she's Chinese American, or Charlayne reading an African story because she's African American. Perhaps one of my favorite moments was the day

Jack McGee with his gruff, tough, New York street-wise voice that lots of people recognize from Rescue Me came in and read Two Frogs from Japan. Every time I hear Jack on the CD saying, "Spahkle and Shimma, Spahkle and Shimma" (or, in regular-old-English, sparkle and shimmer, sparkle and shimmer), I laugh. Every time. And I've heard it thousands of times.

Laura's husband, Rick Hall, is both hilarious and a serious, seasoned performer, and maybe best of all, he loves Anansi stories. I remember thinking when I first heard him read, "ohhhh, so THAT's how Anansi sounds." And his trombone playing--he's one of those all-around talents. One day we suddenly changed our minds about a story and we needed at the last minute to find a reader with a rich, deep, powerful voice. Laura suggested her friend and neighbor, actor and singer

William Thomas Jr. William had just finished taking an exam (he's studying for the Seminary) but pro that he is, within the hour he was at the studio, reading the story as if he'd rehearsed for weeks.

Maybe my favorite day was in the studio with Poppy Champlin, one of the most versatile comediennes around, when she came in and started channeling animals. When she suddenly became a raccoon telling ghost stories on Searching for Fear, I couldn't catch my breath for the laughter. None of us could. We had to take a break from recording. Sometimes in the middle of recording, Lori and I would look at each other in wonder at the magic in that studio, and when Lori sang Laura and me a lullabye she remembered her father singing to her (her dad for years played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway), Laura and I convinced her she had to include it in her telling of A Sense of Theft, and that, as I recall, is when Laura says she first began to hear the music.

Norm:

How long did it take you to put together your CD and what challenges or obstacles did you encounter while putting together the CD? How did you overcome these challenges?

Amy:

We began selecting stories in late summer '05 and by October 2005 we were recording in Laura's studio (Laura was both composer and engineer). The recording went quickly. Each of the performers was exceptional--they walked into the studio with their pages, cozied up to the mic and offered up their enormous talent.

Afterwards, though, Lori and Laura spent days and weeks editing various takes; they kept me out of the studio because we all agreed I was too close to the stories, and too, because we wanted to make sure once they had put together the best cut, someone would have a "clean ear" to listen and make the final changes.

One other note: after day one, after Kathleen Wilhoite and Charlayne Woodard had finished recording, we realized we hadn't asked them to record the titles. Because we were working on a tight budget, Dennis, my husband, said, "Well, what if instead of asking them to return to the studio, the girls record the titles. Laura's girls."

And now, when listeners first hear Ruthie's voice announcing, A Sense of Theft, they swoon. Perfection. It was another one of those magical "accidents."

I don't know that we've actually encountered obstacles. In fact, along the way what has struck me most of all is how extraordinary every person who worked on this has been, how each person performed beyond all my expectations, from the readers to the musicians, Larry Hughes, a clarinetist I found through an old childhood friend, a studio musician in LA, and Luke Hannington who played bass, recorder, and guitar and is a friend and colleague of Laura's, to Laura, of course. The inimitable, ultra-talented Laura. I cried when I first heard her music. I mean truly wept, it was so far beyond what I had dared imagine it could be.

Matt Lands who did the mixing and mastering listened to the first story and understood in a heartbeat what we wanted, and some of the touches no one but we probably will ever notice are the result of his Matt's magic hand. When we had finished the final mix, I called on Walter Green of Weingart Design in Cleveland, Ohio (going back to my childhood hometown); he listened to the CD and instantly understood--this was a classic and the design had to be too.

The most difficult part for me has been learning all the elements of production; I spent days poring over pages of what at first seemed gobbledygook as I tried to understand the manufacturing process and select our manufacturer. But mostly the process has been hard but joyful work. The CD feels, to me, filled with the spirit of all those people whose gave of their talent, and as a physician friend told me when he heard it, "You can hear the joy of all the creators in this."

I guess if there's one part that makes me uneasy, it's the marketing. That part's hard, and out of my realm of experience. So, again, I'm learning.

Norm:

How will you be marketing your CD?

Amy:

We're learning as we go. Universal Press Syndicate is involved; we have contacted all the newspapers in which the column appears, and hope to reach a lot of our readers that way. As you know, I'm reaching out to reviewers, most of whom I've come upon through my membership in the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. We've also sent the CD to several award competitions and to dozens of children's radio hosts around the country. We are performing at as many venues as we can, and our first performance will be on July 8 at Hollygrove, in Hollywood, where Carrie-on, a day recreation facility for children with life-threatening illnesses, is holding a series of open houses.

A while ago I met Tracy Mestres who created Carrie-on, and I knew instantly this was the charity to which we would be donating a portion of our proceeds. Carrie, Tracy's daughter, was before her death at the age of 13, a writer and an artist; I never knew her but a student of mine was her teacher. Angelica used to bring Carrie's stories to my class, and I remembered those stories; somehow the light that was in Carrie's stories seemed like the light that emanates from our CD, and from this whole experience. The match seemed just right.

We also plan to perform at The Geffen Theater in Los Angeles in conjunction with their education program and I hope too, we'll be in other places, in other cities, in bookstores and beyond.

We're also seeking to interest librarians and teachers, and I am still building into the website, www.mythsandtales.com exercises teachers can use in the classroom, ways to use the CD and other folktales to teach.

Where can we buy your CD?

Amy:

For now, the CD is available online at CD Baby, CDbaby.com/cd/friedmanhall. It will be a little while before we can make it available to retail outlets, but people who are uneasy about ordering online can contact me at kellsmom@comcast.net, and I will either mail them a copy or direct them to a store in their neighborhood where they can order it. Soon I hope it will be more widely available, but that's part of this marketing thing.

But besides, CD Baby is a great self-made, small company, and I'd like to support them the way they support so many independent musicians and story tellers.

Is there an underlying message you wish to convey with these stories?

Amy:

The truthful answer is yes. But there's more than one. First, maybe most vividly, the message is that people should involve themselves in community, should resist the lure of selfishness and self-involvement to work together; a little bit the message is not only in the stories but in the whole collaborative result--in what quality results when a group of people working together to create, whether it's a CD or a better world.

Second, and this surprised Lori, Laura and me, but after recording, we discovered that we had created a dynamic we hadn't exactly intended but were pleased to find. Zena in A Sense of Theft, Hannah in A Clever Girl, Sal in The Boatman's Howling Daughter, and The Selkie Bride are such dynamic, optimistic, truthful, powerful women that their energy seems to fuel the CD, making it tilt, perhaps a little, toward the female. An 11-year-old girl told me the other day that she loved the CD. "I'm like Sal," she said, "and like Hannah. And my name's Hannah..." She was grinning, ear to ear. But then her brother said, "I like Gregory, the raccoon," and I remembered that we have a lot of fabulous male stuff in there too.

The bottom line message, ultimately, is that kindness, generosity, curiosity, determination and wisdom are far better traits to possess, and ultimately bring far greater gifts, than do selfishness, greed, and fear.

Norm:

What are your hopes for the CD?

Amy:

We hope people will feel as much joy in listening to it as we experienced making it, and we hope it will reach listeners far and wide. We also hope it will be just the first in a series. Laura, Lori and I have already begun to talk about who and what will be on the next one, and besides, we promised Ruthie.

Blues and Chicago are always mentioned in the same sentence and there's a good reason for it. Chicago is the proclaimed "Blues Capital of the World". Such greats as Buddy Guy, BB King and Muddy Waters have called it home. Blues in Chicago is still very much alive and and kicking its soulful heels up. Anyone that lives or has visited the Windy City will tell you that blues in Chicago are the best you will ever see and hear!

Places like Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S. are located in the famous Blues Alley District by Halsted and the famous and cozy Rosa's Lounge is a short walk away. Also keeping blues in Chicago going strong are places like Buddy Guys Legends and the historic Checkerboard Lounge on Chicago's South Side. There are numerous other blues establishments in the city and suburbs.

Blues in Chicago got its start probably in the pre-Depression era when folks were migrating North from the Southern Mississippi Delta region. People were lured to the big city thinking of better jobs, houses and more opportunities. It did work out for many but not all. People brought with them their dreams, Southern hospitality and their love of music. Big city life meant night life and there were plenty of places for entertainment in Chicago.

Blues changed dramatically in the 1940's but particularly blues in Chicago with the advent of electric guitar.

The electric style of blues is without a doubt what made Chicago famous. BB King and his "Lucille" and Buddy Guy made the Chicago electric blues style a household word by the late 50's and early 60's. The blues were more then just music and notes. It was an emotional outlet and a creative outpouring that could easily captivate and mesmerize an audience of two or twenty thousand. Blues transcended being a music genre and became more of a culture and life style to many.

There are so many ways to enjoy the blues in Chicago. The city is loaded with neighborhood pubs that play blues music live on a nightly basis so people can hang out with friends after work, eat a good home-cooked meal and catch up on conversation while listening to some up and coming blues talent. There are annual blues festivals every year at Grant or Lincoln Park not to mention all the concert venues in and around the city.

Next time you are in the Midwest, you absolutely have to make a stop in the "City of Big Shoulders", Chicago, and check out the finest blues entertainment in the whole wide world! You will not be disappointed. If you are not a blues fan yet you certainly will find yourself tapping your feet and swaying to the music.
